Time and again I read posts where someone asks about a photography school which is often followed by comments by some about school being a waste of time and money.
I will say this. Education is for personal growth. Schools are not a bad thing. Paying mentors and teachers are not a bad thing. Yes, some schools and some teachers are not good. Some schools and some teachers are frauds. I have attended some bad training courses, seen some bad teachers and schools. This doesn’t stop me from continuing to seek education because I see far more bad information in online forums and YouTube videos.
A diploma may be required for some jobs. Certifications and licenses for others. As a photographer, I may never actually be asked about my education. I didn’t get an education in photography because I had to have one to get a job in photography. I got an education in photography because it helped me grow as a photographer. The photography education required me to explore genres of photography I would not have attempted otherwise. As a result, I got better at those types of photography I wanted to improve upon.
I went from struggling with flash and studio lighting to being able to teach lighting and flash. I went from struggling with lighting to being able to create lighting patterns I envision. I went from shooting in semi-automated modes to shooting in manual 95% of the time in order to better control the look of my photographs.
Get photography training for you, not what you think the diploma or certificate may bring but rather what the knowledge gained may bring.
